Hong Kong & Macau Regional Competition

Steinway & Sons International Youth Piano Competition is a talent showcase for young piano prodigies all over the world. The ultimate aim of the competition is to promote piano education and nourish promising musicians. By participating in public competitions of such international standard, young pianists are led to discover the beauty in music as well as themselves.

The first Steinway & Sons International Youth Piano Competition China Regional Competition was held in Beijing in 2002. A remarkable opportunity for young pianists to gain musical experiences as well as to enhance and promote piano music in China into a new era. 

The Competition

Steinway & Sons International Youth Piano Competition welcomes participants from regions all over the world. Selected pianists from different regions will be invited to perform in the Steinway & Sons International Music Festival in Germany, where they earn an once-in-a-lifetime, unparalleled experience of musical sharing as well as global friendship.
The China Region is divided into 13 zones :

(1) Beijing (2) Huabei(Region I) (3) Huabei(Region II) (4) Shanghai (5) Huadong(Region I) (6) Huadong(Region II)
(7) Huazhong (8) Dongbei(Region I) (9) Dongbei(Region II) (10) Huanan (11) Xinan (12) Xibei (13) Hong Kong & Macau

Zone preliminaries will be held in Macau, Beijing, Bengbu, Changchun, Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, Chuzhou, Dalian, Dongtai, Foshan, Fuzhou, Fuyang, Guangzhou, Harbin, Haikou, Hangzhou, Hefei, Huaian, Huizhou, Jinan, Jiangyin, Jinhua, Kunshan, Lianyungang, Nanjing, Nantong, Ningbo, Qingdao, Xiamen, Shantou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Shenyang, Shijiazhuang, Suzhou, Taiyuan, Tongliao, Wuxi, Wuhan, Xi’an, Hong Kong, Xuzhou, Yancheng, Yangzhou, Yixin, Zhangjiagang, Zhengzhou and Zhongshan respectively. The winners of first and second prize in Professional Group A, B & C from Hong Kong & Macau will enter the China Regional Final Competition. Professional Group A and B will compete for the "Professional Special Prize". The prize-winner will be awarded a certificate and an invitation to participate in the "International Steinway Festival" to be held next year in Germany on behalf of China; the First Prize winner of Professional Group C will be awarded an Essex EGP-155C/EP piano designed by Steinway & Sons, and will be invited to give a concert at Horowitz Concert Hall at the Steinway Hall Beijing, and will be promoted on the official platform of Steinway & Sons.The top three places of the Amateur Group A, B & C from Hong Kong & Macau will compete in the China Regional Final Competition for "Amateur Special Prize" and the ultimate winner will receive an Essex EUP-123E/EP piano designed by Steinway & Sons.

Rules and Regulations

1. No restrictions in nationality. Identity documents issued by the government such as identity card or passport must be shown for age verification. The Organizer reserves the right to disqualify and exclude any applicants who do not match the age requirement in registered class.
2. To play from memory is NOT required in the Preliminary. But finalists MUST play from memory.
3. Recommended to choose the repertoires by different styles in Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th century or modern music. Change repertoire is not allowed once registered.
4. Contestant must bring one set of original copy of the music they are going to play for adjudicators' reference and will be returned immediately after performance.
5. Entry form is invalid if not properly completed or with insufficient supporting materials.
6. Mark sheet will not be returned but each contestant will receive a competition certificate.
7. Adjudicators will not adjudicate participants who are their students.
8. In the Preliminary and the Final, the panel of adjudicators has the right to terminate the performance when they feel appropriate. The decisions and results of the competition by the adjudicators are final and indisputable.
9. The Organizer reserves the right to disqualify contestants.
10.  Limited applicants for each group and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. The organizer reserves the rights to close the registration without prior notice when the quota of a group is full.
11. Contestants not receiving any Preliminary Competition information by 26 Aug 2019 should contact the Organizer at 2737 7635 / 2737 7607 / 2737 7696.
12. The entry fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.
13. The results of Preliminary will be announced on websites (tomleemusic.com.hk) one week after date of competition.
14. Organizer has the right of not allowing audiences to attend the preliminary competition if the venue is too small.
15. All contestants should dress properly for the competition.
16. No person or party who has not been authorized by the Organizer may take photos, videos or make any kind of recordings at any session of the competitions. The copyrights of all audio and visual recordings of the competition are deemed the properties of the Organizer.
17. All winners are required to take part in all promotional activities related to the competition. No remuneration will be provided.
18. Rules, regulations, awards and judging panel are subject to change without prior notice.
19. In case of discrepancy between the English translation and the original Chinese text, the Chinese version shall prevail.
